The mayor of Arcadia, California, faces felony charges for acting on behalf of the Chinese government without disclosure while holding elected office. The U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Mayor Eileen Wang coordinated foreign-backed activities promoting the interests of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) between 2020 and 2022.

Wang agreed to plead guilty to the charge of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government and simultaneously tendered her resignation. The felony carries a potential prison sentence of up to ten years. Federal prosecutors described her actions as undermining U.S. democracy by advancing directives from PRC officials, which she failed to report publicly.

According to federal authorities, Wang spread pro-PRC propaganda within the United States while holding public office, a role she assumed after being elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022 and later becoming mayor through the council’s rotating system. The investigation confirmed that her foreign-directed activities ceased after she took office in December 2022.

City officials emphasized that the charges apply solely to Wang’s individual conduct and that no city resources or personnel were implicated. The FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division stressed the seriousness of such foreign influence efforts, warning that those acting covertly for foreign governments will face prosecution.

Wang’s legal representatives acknowledged her accountability for previous personal mistakes and issued an apology. They also highlighted her continued commitment to serving the Arcadia community, despite the charges.
