Google Photos has expanded its creative toolkit with the introduction of Video Remix, a new AI-powered feature accessible through the app’s recently updated Create tab. This tool enables eligible Google AI subscribers to convert ordinary video clips into artistically enhanced versions using effects like watercolor, sketchbook drawings, and oil paintings.
Powered by Google’s Gemini Omni AI model, Video Remix offers users options to brighten dim footage with cinematic relighting, swap out backgrounds for more engaging scenes, and apply various artistic filters. This addition complements existing creative functions within the Create tab, which also includes Animation, Cinematic Photo, Collage, Highlight Video, Photo to Video, and Remix tools.
Access to Video Remix is limited to users aged 18 and older with personal Google Accounts; it excludes Google Workspace and school accounts. The feature is available only in select countries and to subscribers of the Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans. While free users can experiment with AI-generated content, usage limits are stricter without a paid plan, which allows more daily generations of photos and videos.
Google Photos has previously introduced generative AI enhancements in recent months. In mid-2025, the Photo to Video feature debuted, capable of transforming pictures into animations or stylized art forms such as 3D and anime. Later efforts expanded Remix into an experimental phase for selfies, portraits, and pet photos with a variety of distinctive filters. Most recently, text prompt support was added to Photo to Video, further broadening user customization possibilities.
Though generative AI tools like Video Remix can yield impressive effects, Google cautions that outputs may occasionally be inaccurate or unexpected. Users are encouraged to experiment within the platform’s guidelines and subscription terms.
