Google has released a significant update to the Pixel Journal app, extending beyond the Pixel 11 to older devices. Central to this upgrade is the integration of Private AI Compute in the cloud, which enables smarter formatting of journal entries through a new “Auto format” feature offering simple or expressive modes. This marks a shift from purely on-device AI processing to a hybrid model that enhances capabilities while maintaining user privacy.
The update also introduces a dedicated Customization tab that lets users choose between Compact or Full media layouts for their entries, giving more control over how content appears. On the compose screen, the Inspiration bottom sheet now features a new top icon, along with options to refresh suggestions and explicitly close the panel, improving user navigation and interactivity.
In addition to these feature upgrades, Pixel Journal has rolled out scheduled journaling reminders that notify users at three set times during the day: morning, afternoon, and evening. This change aims to encourage consistent journaling habits. Furthermore, the app’s dark theme received refinement in the Entries tab, enhancing the visibility of the bookmarks icon, while the Insights tab’s calendar layout was subtly tweaked to improve clarity.
The update represents version 2026.07.27.x currently appearing on devices like the Pixel 10a, though a full rollout is still underway. Users retain control over these AI-driven features with the option to disable them in the app settings, ensuring privacy remains a priority. This progression follows Google’s broader trend of employing cloud-based AI to balance advanced functionality with secure, isolated environments on users’ devices.
