He admitted that while he initially led the effort to oust Sam Altman as CEO, he later reversed his position to support Altman’s reinstatement to prevent what he feared would be the company’s collapse.
The episode occurred as tensions within OpenAI’s board climaxed. Sutskever explained that in the year before Altman’s removal, he gathered evidence he believed showed Altman had been dishonest, which he viewed as undermining OpenAI’s core mission to develop artificial general intelligence safely. This distrust motivated the board, led by Sutskever, to vote against Altman’s leadership in November 2023.
The fallout was swift and destabilizing. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and a close ally of Altman and Sutskever, resigned immediately.
