Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder and former chief scientist holding a significant stake in the company, provided an insider perspective on the dramatic leadership shift that unfolded in 2023. He admitted that while he initially led the effort to oust Sam Altman as CEO, he later reversed his position to support Altman’s reinstatement to prevent what he feared would be the company’s collapse.
The episode occurred as tensions within OpenAI’s board climaxed. Sutskever explained that in the year before Altman’s removal, he gathered evidence he believed showed Altman had been dishonest, which he viewed as undermining OpenAI’s core mission to develop artificial general intelligence safely. This distrust motivated the board, led by Sutskever, to vote against Altman’s leadership in November 2023.
The fallout was swift and destabilizing. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and a close ally of Altman and Sutskever, resigned immediately. Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor, moved quickly to hire Altman, while hundreds of OpenAI employees threatened to quit. The sudden upheaval prompted Sutskever to reconsider, describing his support for reclaiming Altman’s CEO position as a "Hail Mary" to save the company from disintegration.
Elon Musk, another OpenAI co-founder, is pursuing a lawsuit against the company that alleges OpenAI abandoned its founding nonprofit goals in favor of profit-driven interests under Altman’s leadership. Musk seeks to remove both Altman and Brockman, and demands the transfer of a substantial sum from OpenAI’s for-profit entities back to its nonprofit parent. Closing arguments are scheduled soon.
Sutskever’s own background adds weight to his testimony. After leaving Google—where he had turned down a high-paying role to join OpenAI—he became a central figure in AI research, credited with pioneering work on neural networks. His recruitment is viewed by Musk as pivotal to OpenAI’s early success. Over time, however, the alliance between Sutskever, Altman, and Brockman frayed, culminating in the boardroom conflict that disrupted the company’s leadership and reputation.
