Spotify announced it will begin labeling accounts that generate AI-created music with a distinct “AI Persona” tag starting mid-September. This measure aims to distinguish human artists from AI-driven profiles, providing more transparency for users browsing the platform.
The new badges will appear on artist profiles in search results and other areas of the app, clearly indicating when a persona may not be human. Spotify will also exclude these AI-labeled profiles from its algorithmic and editorial recommendations, which are critical channels for music discovery on the platform.
The company will allow AI-generated music accounts to voluntarily disclose their status. If they do not, Spotify’s human moderators and proprietary AI tools will review and apply the label accordingly. Spotify emphasized that building trust between artists and fans requires authenticity, a principle that is increasingly important in an era dominated by generative AI music.
Spotify’s move follows growing user frustration with accounts presenting themselves as human but actually being automated or AI-generated. Last April, the platform introduced a “Verified by Spotify” badge exclusively for real human artists to strengthen trust on the service. Additionally, Spotify rolled out tools to show how AI might have assisted in song creation and to highlight individual artist contributions on tracks.
Alongside labeling AI personas, Spotify has enforced policies against unauthorized vocal impersonations and spam-like mass uploads of AI music. Paradoxically, the company also embraces artificial intelligence to enhance user experience, launching features like an interactive AI assistant akin to ChatGPT and an AI-driven DJ function.
Through licensing partnerships with major record labels such as Universal Music Group (UMG), Warner Music Group, and Sony, Spotify is expanding AI capabilities responsibly. The platform now allows users to remix or cover certain songs using AI under UMG’s agreement, while collaborating across the industry to develop ethical AI music tools.
