Google is in advanced talks to acquire a non-exclusive license for the AI technology developed by the startup Mechanize Inc., in a deal reportedly valued at around $1.5 billion. Alongside the technology acquisition, Google aims to onboard several of Mechanize’s top experts specialized in AI model evaluation and development.
Mechanize, established last year, focuses initially on AI applications in software engineering through the creation of simulated virtual environments and evaluation benchmarks designed to train AI agents on business-related tasks. However, the startup has set a broader ambition of fully automating valuable work across various sectors of the economy.
The startup has gained attention and funding from notable investors, including former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, and podcaster Dwarkesh Patel. Its CEO, Tame Bisoglu, previously co-founded Epoch Artificial Intelligence Inc., underscoring the technical pedigree behind Mechanize.
Google’s interest in Mechanize comes amid growing pressure to enhance its AI coding agents, which currently lag behind competitors like Anthropic with Claude Code and OpenAI with Codex. Licensing Mechanize’s technology could strengthen Google’s AI tools and accelerate innovation without the complications of a full startup acquisition.
This approach reflects a tactical pattern by Google to balance acquiring advanced AI innovations and talent while navigating regulatory concerns associated with outright buyouts. The company has employed similar partial acquisition strategies before, such as its hybrid deal with Windsurf, where Google licensed technology and hired key engineers, including the former CEO who now leads its AI coding platform Antigravity.
