Mt. Gox, the defunct cryptocurrency exchange, recently moved more than 10,000 bitcoins valued at approximately $730 million into a new wallet, marking its largest transfer in two months. This movement comes as the deadline for creditor refunds in October approaches, signaling potential preparations for forthcoming distributions to former users.
Alongside this withdrawal, roughly 116 bitcoins were returned to Mt. Gox’s hot wallet as change, but none of the transferred assets have entered exchanges or custody providers so far. Despite these notable internal wallet movements, Mt. Gox’s main wallet remains heavily stocked with about 34,500 BTC, worth over $2.3 billion. This continuing holding underscores the scale of the remaining bounty tied up in the exchange’s unresolved claims.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin faces a sharp market downturn, having recently fallen below the $70,000 support level and touching its lowest price in seven weeks. The cryptocurrency now trades near $69,400, reflecting a daily loss exceeding 4 percent amid broad bearish momentum. Yet, this price dip has spurred a rebound in demand, evidenced by significant BTC outflows from exchanges totaling over $4 billion in recent days, suggesting that investors are actively buying on the dip.
Short-term indicators, however, paint a more cautious picture. The Bitcoin Momentum Index Bias points to persistent bearish momentum with sellers dominating the market. The MACD technical indicator shows Bitcoin’s price below its moving averages, currently trapped between $74,000 and $77,000, further confirming the prevailing downtrend. While increased demand has offered some support, it has not been sufficient to reverse the bearish trend.
Looking ahead, the market could continue to test lower levels, with $65,000 identified as the next major support point. Conversely, sustained buying could help Bitcoin reclaim the $70,000 threshold and challenge the $74,000 resistance zone. The ongoing Mt. Gox activity introduces an additional variable at a critical moment for Bitcoin’s price stabilization and potential recovery.
