The Philippines is expanding its defence collaboration with Canada as both nations respond to increasing challenges posed by China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. This move underscores a shared commitment to uphold international law and maintain a stable Indo-Pacific security environment.
During a recent visit to Ottawa, the Philippine Defence Secretary signed agreements with his Canadian counterpart to enhance defence cooperation and mutual logistical support. These accords highlight a broadening partnership that also includes shared concerns over supply chain security and disinformation threats.
Looking ahead, the Philippine president is expected to visit Canada to discuss trade, tourism, and key exports such as liquefied natural gas, reflecting an expanding bilateral agenda beyond defence. The defence ministers also commemorated a decade since an international tribunal invalidated China’s sweeping historical claims in the South China Sea under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Canada has played a significant role in advancing the Philippines’ maritime security capabilities, particularly through satellite technology that tracks illegal fishing and Chinese coast guard movements. Cybersecurity cooperation has also intensified, supporting the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen cyber defence as part of Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy launched in late 2022.
The Philippines, with its population spread over thousands of islands, faces constant pressure on its exclusive economic zone. The country views itself as a frontline state defending the maritime rules-based order, making it a focal point for regional partnerships with countries including Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and France.
According to the Philippine Defence Secretary, maintaining freedom of navigation and respecting UNCLOS principles in the region is essential for national prosperity and security. He criticized China’s claims as unfounded, given the extensive distance from its shores, emphasizing the need for international solidarity to counter ongoing challenges.
