Russian forces intensified their aerial offensive in Ukraine, unleashing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles that struck Kyiv, Dnipro, and other cities. The overnight bombardment claimed at least 22 civilian lives and injured 138 people, according to Ukrainian officials. Explosions continued into the early hours, sending shockwaves through residential areas and leaving destruction in their wake.
Among the casualties were a 3-year-old child, a woman, and her 8-year-old son, recovered from rubble in Dnipro, where authorities declared a day of mourning following the attack. Kyiv suffered six fatalities, with local officials reporting dozens wounded in the capital alone. Amid the strikes, many civilians sought shelter amid blasts, with some taking refuge in bathtubs amid shattered windows and falling debris.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian assault included 73 missiles and 656 drones aimed at major urban centers, including eastern cities such as Poltava, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Kyiv’s air defenses managed to intercept a significant portion of the attack, destroying or suppressing 40 missiles and over 600 drones. However, an ongoing shortage of U.S.-supplied air defense systems, partly due to depleted inventories linked to other conflicts, has left Ukraine vulnerable to Russia’s increasing use of ballistic and hypersonic weaponry.
Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be escalating Moscow’s campaign in an effort to exploit Ukraine’s stretched defenses and influence public opinion at home. The Kremlin’s intensified strikes coincide with warnings of further attacks and diplomatic signals, including calls for foreign embassies to evacuate Kyiv, although no damage to diplomatic missions was immediately reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed urgently for enhanced support from the United States and Europe. He characterized the strike as a clear message from Russia that missile attacks will persist unless Ukraine’s defenses improve. Officials highlighted the threat posed by hypersonic missiles recently deployed by Moscow, further complicating Ukraine’s defensive efforts against aerial attacks.
