Russia launched a massive overnight offensive targeting multiple Ukrainian cities, deploying hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Ukrainian officials reported at least 18 civilian deaths and more than 130 injuries, with the hardest hit areas including the capital Kyiv and the industrial city of Dnipro.

The attacks extended past dawn, causing widespread destruction and devastation. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of a 3-year-old child and an 8-year-old boy, alongside other victims trapped in the rubble of destroyed apartment buildings in Dnipro. The city’s mayor declared a day of mourning following the assault.

The scale of the strikes appeared to exploit Ukraine’s vulnerabilities in air defense, as the country faces shortages of U.S.-supplied systems. Despite efforts to intercept incoming threats, Ukrainian forces managed to destroy or neutralize a large portion of the Russian drones and missiles, yet many still penetrated defenses, resulting in significant civilian casualties and damage.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ramped up this aerial campaign amid four years of conflict, aiming to shift perceptions within Russia and pressure Kyiv. Recent launches included powerful hypersonic ballistic missiles in addition to conventional attacks. Kyiv residents endured prolonged explosions, leading many to take shelter in makeshift protective spaces, including bathtubs during the overnight barrages.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Western allies for increased support, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by missile strikes and stressing the necessity of sufficient air defense systems to protect civilians. The attacks underscore the persistent danger faced by Ukrainian cities despite international military aid and defensive efforts.

The Russian air assault focused on Kyiv, Dnipro, and eastern regional centers such as Poltava, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Official reports detailed the launch of dozens of missiles and over six hundred drones in the coordinated strikes. Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted a majority of these, yet the persistent intensity of the attacks demonstrated Moscow’s strategic resolve to maintain pressure across multiple fronts.

The situation remains tense as Ukraine confronts repeated waves of aerial bombardment, while civilian populations continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing conflict. Authorities warn of further escalations and emphasize the urgent need for enhanced protection against ballistic and missile threats targeting populated areas.
