A coalition of researchers has identified 17 critical global threats that challenge humanity’s survival, drawing urgent attention to the dangers posed by the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and the potential for nuclear conflict. These risks, if unchecked, could contribute to catastrophic outcomes, including the extinction of humankind within this century.

Beyond AI and nuclear war, the scientists assessed a wide range of environmental, technological, and geopolitical hazards. Their findings suggest an interconnected web of crises, from climate change to ecosystem collapse, that collectively endanger global stability. The team argues that these threats demand immediate and coordinated international action to mitigate their impact.

Among the identified dangers, the improper deployment of AI technologies raises concerns about loss of control, misuse in autonomous weapons, misinformation campaigns, and exacerbation of social inequalities. Simultaneously, nuclear weapons remain a persistent existential threat, with the potential for escalation in geopolitical tensions leading to widespread destruction.

Other significant risks flagged by the scientists include severe biodiversity loss, unsustainable resource exploitation, pandemics, and global economic disruptions. These threats often amplify one another, creating complex scenarios where single events could trigger cascading effects.

The research underscores the need for robust frameworks governing technological advances and disarmament efforts, alongside strengthened environmental policies and international cooperation. Experts warn that addressing these challenges will require integrating scientific knowledge with political will and public engagement to ensure resilient and sustainable futures.
