Amazon is advancing the construction of a massive AI-focused data center in Texas that is poised to become the largest single source of carbon emissions in the United States. The facility will be powered by a natural gas plant equipped with 35 turbines capable of producing up to 7.65 gigawatts, authorized to emit approximately 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. This emission level surpasses that of any other power plant in the country, according to public permit records.
Despite this substantial increase in emissions, Amazon maintains its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions globally by 2040. The company co-founded The Climate Pledge, a coalition of more than 700 organizations aiming to eliminate corporate carbon footprints. However, Amazon’s carbon output has risen in recent years, driven largely by investments in new data centers to support artificial intelligence workloads, including this new Texas facility.
The Texas power plant’s reliance on natural gas marks a significant departure from renewable energy, intensifying concerns about the environmental impact of expanding digital infrastructure. Amazon secured all necessary regulatory permits for the project located in Pecos County, Texas, where the natural gas plant will provide onsite power. Burning natural gas to generate electricity is the primary reason for the high carbon emissions permitted for this site.
Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan acknowledged the tension between the company’s AI growth and climate goals, pointing out that the global energy context has shifted since The Climate Pledge was launched. She affirmed Amazon’s unchanged commitment to reaching net-zero emissions despite these challenges. This stance parallels announcements from other tech giants like Microsoft, which recently reported increasing emissions due to expanding data centers and changing renewable energy strategies, yet insists on meeting its sustainability targets.
