BYD is preparing to enter Japan’s kei-car segment with a new small electric vehicle that could surpass existing models in both range and affordability. This move targets urban drivers who prioritize compact size, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness for short trips in crowded environments.

According to a recent TikTok analysis, BYD’s upcoming model—referred to as the Raco—could start at around $13,100 before government incentives, undercutting or matching the price of leading competitors. With Japan’s EV incentives potentially reducing the cost by roughly $900, the effective base price becomes even more accessible. The Raco’s estimated range reaches approximately 130 miles on entry-level trims, extending up to 200 miles on higher-end versions. This compares favorably to the Nissan Sakura, Japan’s best-selling electric kei car, which offers about 112 miles of range and a starting price close to $15,000.

The kei car segment specializes in small vehicles designed to navigate tight urban streets, facilitate easy parking, and reduce ownership costs. Introducing an affordable electric option with enhanced range positions BYD to challenge domestic manufacturers that have traditionally dominated this space. For many local drivers, a smaller battery is sufficient for daily commutes, and the lower operating expenses of EVs—including reduced fuel and maintenance costs—could make this vehicle especially appealing.

BYD’s strategy focuses on matching the practical needs of city drivers rather than competing with larger, more expensive models dominating other markets. The company aims to normalize smaller, budget-friendly electric vehicles that suit everyday urban mobility, potentially setting a new standard beyond Japan’s borders. This initiative has already sparked discussion among international observers, some of whom long for compact EV options in their own countries.
