Electric vehicle (EV) owners often face costly battery replacements after minor damage, but CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, is developing robotic repair hubs designed to drastically cut repair times and costs. These centers intend to restore damaged batteries by fixing individual cells rather than replacing the entire pack, shortening turnaround times to under 72 hours.

CATL’s robotic repair sites, supported by mobile service trucks, can sometimes complete repairs within 48 hours on location. The company plans to expand this network to cover 100 cities globally by the end of 2026. By focusing on cell-level repairs, CATL expects to lower repair bills from roughly $15,000 for full battery replacement to nearly $1,480, reducing costs by about 90 percent.

Battery repairs remain a major challenge in the EV industry, especially since the battery is often the most expensive part of the vehicle. Insurance companies typically declare lightly damaged EVs as total losses when battery health cannot be quickly assessed or repaired, causing more vehicles to be scrapped unnecessarily. Data from Germany’s Allianz reveal that battery-related damages account for around 8 percent of total EV claim costs, highlighting the need for better repair solutions.

Reflecting these industry challenges, CATL’s network already extends to over 1,300 franchise centers worldwide and includes company-operated repair sites in China, Norway, and Turkey. Their robotic systems perform tasks such as painting and applying adhesives without human intervention, ensuring consistent quality and efficiency. Additionally, mobile repair trucks can run extensive diagnostics and complete a wide range of repairs onsite, covering the majority of non-deep battery issues.

CATL’s repair strategy is designed not only for its own battery models but also for other new-energy vehicles, potentially encouraging manufacturers to design batteries with easier serviceability. This scalable repair infrastructure aims to lower ownership costs, safeguard resale value, and reduce insurance write-offs by enabling faster, less expensive battery repairs on a global scale.
