ChargePoint is significantly boosting electric vehicle (EV) charging capacity in the southeastern United States by introducing over 200 new public charging ports. This expansion stems from an extended partnership with Optimus Energy Solutions, which will manage ownership and operation of the new sites while ChargePoint supplies the necessary hardware, software, and support services.
The new chargers will be strategically placed in high-demand areas, including quick-service restaurants and retail centers, where EV drivers typically seek convenient and accessible charging. This effort addresses a long-standing gap in public charging infrastructure across the Southeast, a region with rising EV adoption but historically slower network growth compared to other parts of the country.
ChargePoint recently recorded rapid growth in its network, adding nearly 190,000 charging ports nationwide this year. However, the company highlighted a concerning trend: driver demand is increasing faster than charger installations, leading to heightened competition for available ports. This imbalance underlines the urgency to accelerate charger deployments to prevent congestion and maintain a smooth charging experience for users.
Expanding robust and accessible public EV charging infrastructure remains a key factor in promoting wider electric mobility. The partnership’s focus on well-trafficked commercial sites aims to meet drivers' needs for reliable and convenient charging options, enhancing overall EV adoption in the region.
