Colas Rail UK has become the first in the rail infrastructure sector to deploy hydrogen-powered engine carbon cleaning technology across its entire tamper fleet. Following successful trials on two machines at their Rugby depot, the company is now extending this solution to 31 tampers used for track maintenance. This move aims to significantly lower their Scope 1 emissions, which refer to direct greenhouse gases produced by owned or controlled sources.
The hydrogen carbon clean procedure involves using hydrogen fuel to remove carbon deposits within diesel engines without dismantling them or relying on traditional chemical or mechanical methods. This innovative system improves engine efficiency, reduces fuel consumption, and cuts pollution levels, aligning with Colas Rail’s broader environmental commitments.
By deploying this technology internally, Colas Rail demonstrates a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to managing engine maintenance. Instead of outsourcing cleaning services or replacing parts, the company has developed in-house capability that minimizes downtime for its fleet. This process is expected to extend engine lifespan while contributing to the rail industry's efforts to reduce environmental impact.
This initiative comes amid increasing regulatory pressure on transport and infrastructure sectors to meet climate targets. Hydrogen carbon cleaning offers a scalable solution for reducing diesel engine emissions, supporting cleaner and more sustainable railway operations.
The application of this technology across Colas Rail’s entire tamper fleet represents a concrete step toward greener rail infrastructure maintenance and underscores the potential of hydrogen-based innovations in lowering operational emissions at the source.
