Genesis unveiled the GV80 HEV, marking its debut in the hybrid vehicle market with a state-of-the-art hybrid powertrain designed to deliver a driving experience akin to that of electric vehicles. The new model will reach dealerships next month, showcasing a refined and near-silent EV-like drive enabled by its innovative hybrid technology.
The GV80 HEV incorporates a next-generation 2.5 Turbo Hybrid system, adopting a parallel hybrid architecture. This system combines a starter-generator motor responsible for engine startup and power assist with a dedicated drive motor that supports propulsion and regenerative braking. According to Genesis’ internal testing, this setup improves fuel efficiency by around 25% in two-wheel-drive variants compared to traditional combustion engines.
One of the standout features of this hybrid system is its advanced liquid-cooled battery, the first of its kind within Hyundai Motor Group’s hybrid offerings. This battery design boosts efficiency and supports higher maximum discharge output, contributing to the vehicle’s enhanced performance and range.
To replicate an electric vehicle's smoothness, Genesis equipped the GV80 HEV with an “EV Mode” that operates up to approximately 19 mph (30 km/h). This mode prioritizes electric-only driving to reduce vibration and noise, particularly useful in urban environments such as parking garages or traffic congestion. Beyond that speed, the gasoline engine seamlessly takes over.
The hybrid powertrain delivers a combined output of 347 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, which represents roughly a 16% increase in horsepower and a 26% boost in torque over the conventional GV80 2.5 Turbo engine. This enhanced power allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in about 7.1 seconds, offering both efficiency and strong performance.
Genesis also revealed the GV80 HEV’s fresh exterior and interior styling. The vehicle features the updated Crest Grille and new wheel designs. Inside, customers can choose from four new two-tone color combinations, including Obsidian Black paired with Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue matched with Travertine Beige. Additional design updates include two new wood trim options and innovative quilting patterns, elevating cabin refinement.
