Hornbeck Offshore Services has entered a strategic partnership with Deployable Energy to develop and deploy compact nuclear reactors aboard vessels and offshore installations. This joint effort focuses on integrating Deployable Energy’s transportable microreactor technology, known as the Unity Nuclear Battery, into various maritime applications including offshore vessels, floating data centers, power barges, and inland waterway ships.
The collaboration includes Hornbeck’s investment in the Houston-based developer and a memorandum of understanding to explore commercial deployments. The companies aim to achieve at least a 20% reduction in total ownership costs compared to conventional marine diesel engines or grid-powered solutions, leveraging Hornbeck’s offshore operational experience alongside Deployable Energy’s microreactor innovation.
Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery is a one-megawatt-electric microreactor designed for vessel integration without requiring ships to be purpose-built around nuclear systems. These reactors can operate for over five years before refueling and are scalable to meet higher power demands. This approach presents potential advantages in endurance, energy resilience, and operational economics across maritime markets including defense logistics and autonomous vessels.
A joint working group formed by both companies will focus initially on U.S. markets, addressing vessel integration, economic viability, licensing frameworks, financing, and commercial structuring. The development timeline includes feasibility studies, front-end engineering, detailed design, and regulatory approval processes. However, deployment is contingent on clearing significant challenges like licensing, safety regulations, classification, and liability issues—key hurdles in the broader adoption of nuclear-powered maritime vessels.
Deployable Energy distinguishes itself as the only commercial microreactor developer to have reached reactor criticality and obtained Approval in Principle from a maritime classification society, marking a milestone for maritime nuclear technology. Hornbeck Offshore’s leadership highlights the potential impact of compact nuclear power to improve operational endurance and sustainability in offshore and maritime sectors.
