Blykalla, a Swedish nuclear technology company, has submitted an application for government approval to construct a power station comprising eight small lead-cooled reactors in the Tierp municipality. The proposed facility at Untra aims to deliver up to 440 megawatts (MW) of clean energy, marking a significant step in Sweden’s pursuit of advanced nuclear technologies.
The plant's reactors will utilize lead as a cooling agent instead of traditional water-based systems. Lead cooling offers enhanced safety and efficiency by operating at low pressure and high temperatures, reducing risks of coolant loss and improving heat transfer. This approach reflects a growing interest worldwide in small modular reactors (SMRs) that promise flexible deployment and improved economics.
The eight-reactor configuration will collectively provide a reliable and scalable energy source intended to support Sweden’s energy transition goals. Small lead-cooled reactors are designed to be modular and factory-built, which could shorten construction times and lower initial investment compared to conventional nuclear power plants.
Blykalla's submission is part of a broader European trend exploring new nuclear technologies to replace fossil fuels and ensure stable power supply amid growing demand for carbon-neutral energy. If authorized, the Untra project would become one of the first commercial-scale implementations of lead-cooled SMRs, potentially setting a precedent for future nuclear developments in the region.
