Two energy companies, US-based Terrestrial Energy and British firm Viaro Energy, have entered a critical assessment phase in developing next-generation nuclear reactors designed to reduce carbon emissions in heavy industrial sectors. Their focus is on integral molten salt reactor (IMSR) technology, which offers potential advantages in efficiency and safety compared to conventional nuclear plants.
The partnership combines Terrestrial Energy’s reactor development expertise and Viaro Energy’s industrial energy project capabilities. Together, they aim to deploy compact IMSRs to supply decarbonized process heat for industries like steelmaking, chemical manufacturing, and refining, which traditionally rely on fossil fuels and are difficult to electrify.
Integral molten salt reactors function by circulating fuel dissolved in a molten salt mixture, allowing operation at higher temperatures and lower pressures than traditional water-cooled reactors. This design can improve thermal efficiency and reduce the risk of accidents. It also provides stable, flexible, and low-carbon energy suitable for process heat applications in heavy industry.
Terrestrial Energy leads the commercial development of IMSR technology and is currently conducting licensing and demonstration work to bring these reactors to market. Viaro Energy, with expertise in developing industrial-scale energy projects in the UK and Europe, supports deployment strategies and market integration.
By harnessing IMSR technology, the alliance targets industrial decarbonization paths that complement renewable energy sources, addressing sectors where electrification alone is insufficient. This collaboration exemplifies growing international efforts to blend advanced nuclear innovations with industrial decarbonization goals.
