The head of the Volta River Authority (VRA) has called on power utilities across Africa to consider nuclear energy as part of their future energy strategies. Emphasizing its ability to provide clean air, high reliability, and greater energy density, he presented nuclear power not as a competitor but as a complement to renewable sources.
Speaking at the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) annual meeting, the VRA CEO stressed the importance of integrating nuclear alongside renewables to enhance energy security, support climate resilience, and promote green industrialization on the continent. He underscored the need for collaboration among African utilities to improve grid interconnectivity and efficiently transfer power from surplus to deficit regions.
As Ghana’s main power producer for over six decades, the VRA aligns its operations with principles of innovation, sustainability, and partnership. Its leader reaffirmed commitment to supplying electricity safely and reliably while minimizing environmental impact, continuing efforts that contribute to economic and social progress in Ghana and the wider West African region.
The VRA CEO also referenced Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy agenda, which aims to stimulate national development through increased economic activity. He assured that the Authority will bolster generation capacity, adopt innovative technologies, and form strategic partnerships to fulfill the country’s growing energy demands and support industrial expansion.
