Rivian's latest entry, the 2027 R2, targets the core U.S. electric SUV market with a compact design, competitive range, and a more accessible price point. Deliveries of the top-tier R2 Performance with Launch Package, priced from just under $60,000, have begun, and customers can now personalize their orders online. Rivian expects the R2 to become a key growth driver, producing up to 160,000 units annually at its Illinois plant before expanding manufacturing capacity with a second facility in Georgia set for 2029.

The R2 embodies Rivian’s distinctive styling with its tall, square profile and signature vertical headlights, which have become a hallmark of the brand since its debut models. While it shares design DNA with the larger R1S SUV, the R2 is visibly more compact, yet carries an unexpectedly commanding road presence due to its height and ground clearance. The SUV measures just slightly longer than a Hyundai Ioniq 5 hatchback but towers four inches taller, maintaining Rivian’s rugged and utilitarian aesthetic. Inside, the cabin emphasizes simplicity and improved visibility, with a lower beltline allowing occupants a clearer view compared to many rivals.

With an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles, the R2 offers a pragmatic balance between performance and everyday usability. This range positions it well against competitors, while its starting price, expected to begin at around $45,000 for lower trims, aims to make electric SUVs more attainable for a wider audience. Despite Rivian’s earlier models—the R1S and R1T—seeing a decline in sales last year, the company pins significant hopes on the R2 capturing a broader customer base. CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted the robust order backlog that suggests the R2 could soon become a common sight on American roads.

The production ramp-up reflects Rivian’s strategic plan to increase output rapidly. The Illinois factory's planned volume shows confidence in the vehicle’s market potential, while the forthcoming Georgia plant will further bolster Rivian’s manufacturing footprint. This planned expansion could position the brand as a stronger competitor to Tesla, especially if the R2 achieves widespread adoption similar to Tesla’s Model Y.
