The estate of Donna Summer, the legendary singer known as the “Queen of Disco,” has signed an agreement with Primary Wave Music to oversee her extensive music catalog as well as her name, image, and likeness rights. This partnership aims to enhance the management, marketing, and licensing of Summer’s works across various platforms, including digital, film, television, and branding opportunities.
Summer’s catalog encompasses 17 studio albums, featuring three that reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Notably, she remains the only artist to have three consecutive double albums top this chart, including Live and More, Bad Girls, and On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II. Her impressive singles portfolio includes nearly 90 releases, with 32 making the Billboard Hot 100, 14 landing in the top 10, and four hitting number one. These chart-topping hits include "MacArthur Park," "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" — her duet with Barbra Streisand — "Hot Stuff," and "Bad Girls.”
“Hot Stuff,” the lead single from her seventh album Bad Girls, not only reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 but also earned Summer a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. The title track “Bad Girls” dominated the chart for four weeks and won an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single. Other iconic songs covered in the deal include “I Feel Love,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” “Last Dance,” “On the Radio,” and “Love to Love You Baby.”
Primary Wave highlighted the cultural significance of “I Feel Love,” released in 1977, recognizing its induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and inclusion in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. The track’s lasting influence extends to contemporary artists, having been sampled by Beyoncé on her 2022 release “Summer Renaissance.”
The collaboration grants the Summer estate access to Primary Wave’s marketing and publishing infrastructure. Together, they plan to pursue new avenues in branding, synchronization licensing, and audiovisual projects that leverage Summer’s enduring legacy.
This agreement follows several recent high-profile deals by Primary Wave, known for acquiring rights to catalogs and images of iconic artists. Earlier deals include partnerships with the Norteño-Tejano band Intocable, the estates of Harry Chapin and Eartha Kitt, and a significant transaction with Pete Townshend of The Who. Primary Wave’s growing portfolio also features the works of Bob Marley, Prince, Whitney Houston, and James Brown, supported by its multi-billion dollar flagship music fund.
Donna Summer, who passed away in 2012, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, reflecting her lasting impact on music history.
