Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky travelled to the United Kingdom to engage in high-level discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The talks centered on enhancing defense collaboration and securing a stronger European role in resolving the conflict with Russia, now entering its fifth year.

This meeting gathered the leaders of the so-called E3 group, a coalition of Western powers recognized as some of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters. The UK and France have been key drivers behind the “coalition of the willing,” an initiative aimed at providing security guarantees to Ukraine as part of any future peace framework. Zelensky emphasized the need for Europe to remain united and decisive in these negotiations, highlighting the importance of coordinated air defense and diplomatic efforts.

During his arrival announcement on social media, Zelensky underscored that the conversation would prioritize "our defense in the war, greater cooperation for the security of all of Europe in the area of air defense, and our shared view of diplomatic prospects." The discussions mark continued close cooperation among Ukraine’s Western allies at a time when the US focus has shifted toward tensions with Iran, potentially affecting Washington’s engagement with the Kyiv conflict.

Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, recent escalations have raised concerns about nuclear safety and civilian casualties. Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian drone struck a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Chornobyl nuclear plant, known for the catastrophic 1986 disaster. Although no injuries occurred and radiation levels remained stable after firefighters extinguished a blaze at the site, the attack drew sharp condemnation from Zelensky and Ukraine’s nuclear operator, Enerhoatom. They criticized the strike as a deliberate threat to critical nuclear infrastructure.

In another development, Russian shelling near the southern city of Zaporizhzhia killed several civilians, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian toll in contested areas. Zaporizhzhia has endured relentless bombardment in recent weeks, heightening fears of wider destabilization in the conflict’s southern front.

The summit in London also recalls a previous meeting held in December with the same European leaders to align strategies for supporting Ukraine amidst continued Russian aggression. As the war drags on, these reaffirmed commitments reflect the complexity of securing peace while strengthening defense ties among Ukraine’s primary partners.
