Benjamin Netanyahu is facing significant erosion of support in Israel’s northern region, where communities have borne the brunt of Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks. A poll conducted by Agam Labs highlights a growing dissatisfaction with the prime minister’s handling of the conflict in Lebanon, intensifying pressure on him to adopt a more uncompromising stance.
The survey, carried out at Hebrew University and shared with Reuters, indicates northern voters abandon Likud faster than elsewhere and critique Netanyahu more severely over the recent hostilities. For many in towns like Kiryat Shmona—a city close to the Lebanese border and frequently targeted by Hezbollah attacks—security concerns dominate electoral decisions. Residents want the Israeli government to dismantle Hezbollah entirely rather than accept ceasefires perceived as temporary respites.
The conflict intensified after Hezbollah began firing into Israeli territory following Hamas’s attack in October 2023. Israel responded with a military campaign that eliminated many senior Hezbollah figures, but sporadic rocket fire continued, especially after the U.S. and Israel launched an offensive against Iran earlier this year. More than 50 Israeli civilians have died from these attacks, while Lebanese casualties from Israeli operations exceed 7,500 according to Lebanese claims.
Northern voters express frustration with what they see as Netanyahu’s acquiescence to American diplomatic pressures, particularly those associated with U.S. administration efforts to broker ceasefires. Many believe the prime minister is yielding to international demands rather than prioritizing local security needs.
This dynamic places Netanyahu in a difficult position as national elections approach, with the northern electorate playing a pivotal role in determining whether his ruling coalition can maintain power. Despite his government’s right-wing character, voters in the conflict zone want more aggressive military measures free from external diplomatic constraints.
Voices from northern Israel emphasize the urgency of continuing operations against Hezbollah to prevent further rocket attacks and ensure civilian protection. The widespread sentiment is that ceasefires offer no lasting security, and that a definitive military solution is necessary.
