A coalition of retired US generals recently assessed that Ukraine is gaining the upper hand over Russian forces in the ongoing conflict. They point to Ukraine’s ability to reclaim territory and conduct increasingly sophisticated drone operations that target critical Russian assets far behind the front lines.
According to former Defense Intelligence Agency chief Lt. Gen. Robert Ashley, Ukraine is operationally defeating key Russian objectives, setting conditions for future advances while maintaining freedom of maneuver. Ukrainian commanders have reported recapturing significant territory over the course of the year, particularly in the southeastern regions where intense fighting continues.
Military analysts credit Ukraine’s expanding drone capabilities as a game changer. These unmanned systems now conduct regular mid-range strikes reaching 30 to 60 miles behind Russian front lines, hitting command centers, ammunition caches, and logistical hubs. The daily frequency and number of drone attacks are expected to increase, with some strikes reportedly launched deep into Russian territory itself. This growing drone threat complicates Russia’s operational planning and supply chains.
Despite these advances, experts caution that the current advantage is fragile and contingent. The situation remains volatile and subject to reversal, depending largely on the extent of Russian escalation. Lt. Gen. Ashley emphasizes that while Ukraine is winning on points, a decisive strategic victory is not assured.
On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed for stronger sanctions on Russia, linking Ukraine’s improving battlefield position to a more assertive diplomatic posture. Zelensky underlined that although Ukraine’s frontline positions have strengthened, Russia continues to respond with missile strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and urban centers. This dual pressure on military and civilian fronts underscores the complexity of the conflict going forward.
