Overnight drone strikes escalated the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in multiple casualties and significant damage in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported that at least three people, including a pregnant woman, died during Russian attacks on the Kharkiv region. The strikes also injured several others and damaged residential buildings and a church.

Ukrainian air defenses claimed to have destroyed a majority of the 166 drones launched by Russia, while Russian forces reported intercepting over 140 Ukrainian drones targeting regions including Moscow. Emergency responders continued their work amid the attacks, confronting hazards both in urban and regional areas.

Despite the violence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his commitment to diplomatic solutions. He revealed that Roman Abramovich, a businessman with close ties to the Kremlin, visited Kyiv recently to deliver proposals for potential negotiations. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was open to talks from the outset and emphasized the desire to end the war. His office also issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin urging direct dialogue and framing the frontline as the starting point for diplomacy.

Zelenskyy highlighted growing discontent within Russia regarding the war’s impact on everyday life and the economy, warning that Putin’s ability to maintain support is waning. He called for international assistance to accelerate an end to the conflict. Meanwhile, Putin acknowledged a shared interest in peaceful resolution but has yet to commit to meeting with Zelenskyy.

The ongoing drone exchanges underline the persistent military tension despite diplomatic signals. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reported that Russian attacks targeted emergency services, complicating firefighting efforts following the strikes. These assaults on civilian infrastructure and first responders deepen humanitarian concerns amid the broader war.
