Rivian’s new R2 electric SUV now competes directly with Tesla’s Model Y, matching its energy efficiency while providing a longer range, according to recently released Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) figures. Both vehicles achieve an identical combined rating of 105 MPGe and consume 32 kilowatt-hours of electricity per 100 miles.
Despite the R2’s slightly larger size and weight compared to the Model Y, it achieves comparable efficiency, reflecting advancements in Rivian’s engineering and battery technology. The R2’s driving range is rated at 330 miles, exceeding the Model Y’s 306 miles, thanks to an 86.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack compared to Tesla’s 84.0-kilowatt-hour pack.
The R2’s arrival narrows the longstanding gap that Tesla has held in electric vehicle efficiency within the compact-to-midsize crossover segment. Positioned at a similar price point and appealing to comparable buyers, Rivian’s offering represents a substantial challenge to Tesla’s dominance in this popular category.
Electric SUVs like the R2 and Model Y appeal to consumers seeking practical everyday vehicles that combine lower fuel costs with reduced maintenance expenses relative to gasoline-powered SUVs. Increased competition in this segment could drive better value for consumers and make electric vehicle adoption more accessible.
Rivian plans to begin sending final-order invitations to reservation holders soon, with deliveries expected within weeks after confirmation. Tesla continues to offer highly efficient models, including the Model 3, but in the critical crossover SUV category that many families consider, Rivian’s R2 stands as a strong alternative with improved range.
