The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) reaffirmed its commitment to the INDIA opposition bloc while clarifying its decision to abstain from a prominent meeting convened in New Delhi. CPI(M) General Secretary M. A. Baby stated that his absence should not be seen as a withdrawal from the alliance, emphasizing the party’s ongoing participation through Rajya Sabha member John Brittas.

This moment of tension arises amid criticisms from Congress leaders who have accused CPI(M) and the Left Democratic Front of covert deals with the ruling BJP, charges the CPI(M) strongly denounced as unfounded and misleading. Baby expressed disappointment over Congress’s failure to effectively coordinate opposition parties and urged them to improve collaboration efforts to strengthen the anti-BJP front.

Alongside CPI(M), other key INDIA bloc allies such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have signaled dissatisfaction with Congress, with DMK publicly announcing its boycott of the meeting citing unresolved issues with the party’s conduct. CPI leader D. Raja echoed this sentiment, highlighting the lack of a clear agenda or confirmed participant list ahead of the meeting and pointing to persisting coordination challenges among opposition parties.

Despite these fractures, CPI(M) underlined its foundational role in forming and sustaining the INDIA bloc and insisted its political engagement remains intact. The party’s leadership seeks a more inclusive and consultative approach from Congress, suggesting that bridging these divides is crucial for constructing a viable opposition coalition against the BJP’s dominance.
