Tensions escalated sharply within the INDIA opposition bloc as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced its decision to skip the upcoming alliance meeting, accusing the Congress party of betraying and sidelining its allies. The dispute follows Congress withdrawing from alliances after recent elections in Tamil Nadu, stirring doubts about the coalition’s cohesion ahead of crucial political battles.
The DMK voiced strong displeasure with Congress, labeling its actions as opportunistic backstabbing that disrespects the grassroots workers of the alliance. A DMK spokesperson emphasized that remaining in the same forum as Congress would insult the party's cadre and its efforts, even while affirming a willingness to hear other partners’ perspectives on protecting the interests of the wider public.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) sharply criticized Congress’s approach to alliance leadership. The CPI-M leader highlighted the importance of the largest party in any coalition to maintain unity, suggesting Congress had failed to demonstrate the necessary maturity. He pointed to contradictory remarks by Congress leaders toward CPI-M and DMK as evidence of damaging internal divisions.
The CPI-M urged Congress, particularly its prominent leader, to adopt a more inclusive stance capable of accommodating diverse voices within the alliance. Without such leadership qualities, the bloc risks further fragmentation ahead of upcoming elections, including contentious seat-sharing disputes involving the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress in Jharkhand. These conflicts have exposed cracks not only within the INDIA bloc but also among regional partners engaged in alliance negotiations.
As the INDIA bloc grapples with mounting discord, calls have emerged for Congress to clarify controversial statements made during recent campaigns, particularly accusations involving deal-making with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Left has urged Congress to address these allegations openly to restore trust among alliance members.
This widening rift signals challenges ahead for the INDIA bloc’s objective to present a united front against their political adversaries. With internal disagreements surfacing publicly, the coalition faces questions about its ability to sustain cooperation and compete effectively in future electoral contests.
