In his first public remarks since stepping down as Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell highlighted the critical need to protect the central bank from political pressure. Speaking at the event where he received the John F. Kennedy “Profiles in Courage” award, Powell framed the Federal Reserve’s independence as a vital safeguard for Americans' economic well-being.
Powell pointed out that Congress deliberately insulated monetary policy decisions from politics, a structure respected by past administrations regardless of party affiliation. He warned that any attempt by an administration to remove Fed officials due to policy disagreements could erode public confidence in the institution’s ability to make unbiased decisions based on economic realities.
Though Powell did not explicitly name former President Donald Trump, his remarks recalled their tense relationship during Trump’s second term. Trump repeatedly pressured Powell to lower interest rates to boost the economy, a request Powell resisted, sparking public confrontations. Powell underscored that Federal Reserve decisions must be guided solely by sound economic analysis and not influenced by political considerations, emphasizing the responsibility to serve all Americans rather than any political faction.
