Meta has introduced America’s Workforce Academy (AWA), a $115 million initiative designed to address the urgent need for skilled trade workers critical to building AI infrastructure. The program offers free training for electricians, welders, plumbers, and fiber technicians, including coverage for transportation, certification fees, and wages during the course, removing financial barriers for participants.
The academy promises job placement for every graduate, initially at Meta construction sites, with the option to seek employment elsewhere. AWA will start later this year with pilot programs in Louisiana, Ohio, Texas, and Indiana, aiming to train thousands of workers in its first year alone.
Meta’s president and vice chairman highlighted the importance of creating tangible pathways into skilled trades amidst the economic transformation driven by artificial intelligence. The program echoes historical American efforts, likening today’s infrastructure push for AI dominance to the collective industrial mobilization during World War II.
Mike Rowe, known for advocating skilled trades through his foundation, emphasized the high stakes involved in developing a trained workforce to compete on a global scale against partners like China. He described this moment as a “Sputnik moment” comparable to the space race, underscoring workforce development as central to national success.
The program comes at a time when infrastructure demands are estimated to require trillions of dollars in investment. Industry leaders project that the massive funding needed to support AI expansion hinges on having enough qualified technicians to build and maintain this new infrastructure.
AWA collaborates with key partners such as the National Urban League, Associated Builders and Contractors, and CBRE, with plans to expand its network as the program develops.
