Pinterest has agreed to a $4 billion cloud services contract with Amazon Web Services (AWS) extending through 2031, marking its largest infrastructure investment to date. This strategic partnership underscores Pinterest’s growing reliance on artificial intelligence to refine its visual search capabilities and user recommendations on a platform serving over 600 million monthly users.

The deal builds on a relationship dating back to 2010 and reflects Pinterest’s shift from basic keyword matching to advanced AI models that interpret visual context and user intent. These changes require substantial computing power to train and deploy AI systems at scale. To meet these demands, Pinterest will leverage AWS Trainium, an AI chip designed to reduce the cost and processing time of running large models, enhancing its visual search and personalization performance.

Additionally, Pinterest plans to expand the use of AWS Graviton processors, which already account for about a third of its current computing operations, across more backend systems. This infrastructure upgrade aims to increase efficiency while providing Pinterest with greater flexibility in hardware and cloud resources.

The Pinterest Chief Technology Officer highlighted the company’s commitment to making content discovery more personalized and visually driven, stating that the expanded AWS partnership supports accelerating AI innovation. This collaboration is designed to improve both user engagement and advertising outcomes by advancing Pinterest’s proprietary and open-source AI models.

Alongside this cloud agreement, Pinterest has introduced Pinterest Assistant, a conversational search tool that allows users to refine their queries interactively. This feature moves Pinterest closer to bridging the gap between user inspiration and purchase, addressing a longstanding challenge in transforming visual discovery into commercial transactions.

Recently, Pinterest reported strong financial results, with quarterly revenue surpassing $1 billion and a year-over-year growth rate exceeding expectations. Monthly active users hit a new high, and commercial-intent searches now represent roughly half of all queries, placing monetization and user engagement at the forefront of the company’s strategic priorities.
