Turkmenistan and China have intensified discussions on expanding their collaboration in the gas sector, aiming to support new projects and upgrade infrastructure. This push for deeper cooperation emerged during a diplomatic meeting between Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New York.

The energy partnership includes a recent contract signed between Turkmengaz, Turkmenistan’s state gas concern, and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) for a turnkey project on the fourth phase of the Galkynysh gas field. Development of this phase is projected to boost annual gas production by up to 10 billion cubic meters, significantly enhancing Turkmenistan's export capabilities. Drilling operations for this phase began in mid-April.

Expanding beyond production, Turkmengaz also identified collaboration with Chinese companies in supplying critical equipment and machinery. At a Turkmenistan-China business forum in Ashgabat, Deputy Chairman Murad Archaev highlighted opportunities in heavy construction, drilling rigs, blowout preventers, drilling tools, and various pipe products such as drill pipes, tubing, and large-diameter pipelines. The scope extends to technological equipment for gas treatment and processing, welding and insulation materials, and spare parts to maintain operational facilities.

This strategic emphasis on joint development aims not only to increase output but also to modernize Turkmenistan’s gas infrastructure by leveraging Chinese technology and expertise. The partnership reflects Turkmenistan’s intent to solidify its position as a major gas exporter by enhancing project scale and efficiency with international cooperation at its core.
