The mayor of Arcadia, California, has agreed to plead guilty to charges accusing her of secretly working as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. Eileen Wang faces federal allegations that she helped disseminate propaganda favored by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) via a media platform aimed at Chinese American audiences.

Federal prosecutors detailed how Wang collaborated with her former fiancé to operate a website called “U.S. News Center,” which published content approved and directed by PRC officials. Documents reveal she routinely posted pre-written articles sent by Chinese government contacts and covertly tracked audience engagement, reporting back to her handlers without disclosing their influence to the public.

Wang’s activities came under scrutiny after her ex-fiancé and campaign manager, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, pleaded guilty to similar charges and received a prison sentence. According to the Department of Justice, both Wang and Sun took orders from PRC officials to promote narratives favorable to the Chinese government through their platform.

In one instance, prosecutors said Wang modified an article at the request of a Chinese official, then confirmed publication and reader engagement through screenshots sent via WeChat. These communications show a systematic effort to amplify messages under Beijing’s direction while concealing the source of these materials from the American readership.

The Department of Justice highlighted the broader national security implications of the case, emphasizing the risk posed by individuals who surreptitiously influence U.S. discourse on behalf of foreign powers. Wang appeared in court recently and is expected to enter her formal plea in the near future. If convicted, she faces potential imprisonment of up to ten years.

Wang was elected to the Arcadia City Council in 2022 and subsequently served as mayor on a rotating basis. The investigation into her actions sheds light on challenges related to foreign propaganda campaigns targeting ethnic communities in the United States, illustrating the complexities of safeguarding democratic institutions from covert foreign influence.
