CNN’s Chief Media Analyst Brian Stelter acknowledged staff concerns regarding the pending merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., but cautioned against oversimplified portrayals of morale. In a public response, Stelter described the atmosphere within CNN as “complicated,” noting that employees hold diverse and sometimes conflicting views on the implications of the deal.
Stelter did not dismiss reports that some CNN employees worry the merger could bring politically influenced programming and personnel shifts, especially given CEO David Ellison’s perceived ties with the Trump administration. He also acknowledged circulating speculation about CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss potentially taking a leading role at CNN. However, Stelter rejected characterizations of widespread hopelessness within the newsroom, calling certain reports “just ridiculous.”
Highlighting CNN’s history, Stelter pointed out that the network has weathered multiple ownership changes without losing its footing. He stressed that stability remains a top priority for journalists and leadership alike, pointing to CEO Mark Thompson’s efforts to maintain calm amid the transition. Stelter emphasized that any instability would not only affect internal morale but also risk undermining the network’s viewer base and financial health.
Stelter reiterated Thompson’s appeal to staff to avoid jumping to conclusions based on perception, citing a disconnect between fears within CBS News and the actual state of affairs at CNN. The merger, scheduled to close by September, continues to face regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges, with authorities worldwide reviewing the deal for competition compliance.
A Paramount representative underlined the global regulatory approvals received so far, stating the transaction aims to build a stronger competitor in the streaming and technology markets, expand consumer choices, and fuel investment in premium content and theatrical distribution.
