Compulsion Games, known for the critically acclaimed title South of Midnight, has emerged from its recent divestment by Microsoft Xbox ready to forge new industry partnerships. The studio confirmed it will continue as an independent developer, emphasizing its goal to collaborate with other studios across both gaming and entertainment fields.

The move follows a major restructuring by Microsoft that included thousands of layoffs and the spin-off of four game studios, including Compulsion. This shake-up stemmed from Xbox’s shift in focus toward major franchises, relegating smaller titles with less commercial impact, such as South of Midnight, to the sidelines despite their critical success.

Compulsion highlighted its award-winning pedigree, with South of Midnight having received several prestigious accolades including a BAFTA and Peabody Award. The studio invited potential partners to leverage its creative and technical expertise to develop engaging new projects. Previous work from Compulsion also includes titles like We Happy Few and contributions to franchises such as Darksiders and Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale.

In its statement, Compulsion underlined its commitment to delivering memorable, original intellectual properties by offering a collaborative approach built on artistry and technical skill. The studio’s renewed independence marks a return to its roots and a fresh drive to support diverse development efforts beyond the scope of large corporate publishing.

Xbox’s CEO has steered the brand toward prioritizing established franchises like Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Halo, driving the decision to cut studios that do not fit this model. While layoffs affected many developers during this transition, Compulsion’s leadership remains optimistic about new collaborations and future projects within the broader games industry.
