The Obidanco Group of Companies has entered a strategic alliance with Turkish-based Jiangsu Lihe Electrical Equipment to begin local production of electricity transformers in Nigeria. This partnership aims to build Nigeria’s capacity to manufacture critical power infrastructure components domestically while serving markets across Africa.
During the recent signing ceremony, both companies committed to establishing manufacturing operations that would reduce reliance on imported electrical equipment. The initiative is expected to enhance Nigeria’s role as a regional hub for transformer production and distribution, supporting ongoing efforts to expand and modernize power networks across the continent.
The CEO of Obidanco Group emphasized that this collaboration will help address the continent’s growing demand for reliable electricity infrastructure, foster technology transfer, and create new employment opportunities. By deepening local industrial participation and foreign technical collaboration, Nigeria aims to accelerate its industrial growth in the electrical equipment sector.
Representing Jiangsu Lihe Electrical Equipment, the firm’s delegate formally endorsed the agreement, signaling confidence in the project's potential to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity value chain. This comes at a time when the country is pursuing federal initiatives focused on upgrading transmission lines, substations, and distribution systems nationwide to alleviate persistent power supply challenges.
Experts note that developing local transformer manufacturing will likely reduce procurement delays and lower operational costs for electricity providers, fostering a more resilient and cost-effective power sector. By producing transformers domestically, Nigeria and its partners aim to address equipment shortages that have long hampered electricity transmission and distribution improvements.
