Santander announced the extension of its artificial intelligence (AI) tools from 40,000 to all 185,000 employees as part of its strategy to generate more than 1 billion euros in business value by 2028. This move marks a significant expansion in the bank’s AI ecosystem, aiming to embed technology across every level of its operations.
The bank equips staff with AI-driven applications designed to optimize daily tasks such as faster information retrieval, document summarization, enhanced customer interactions, and streamlined internal processes. This wide adoption is supported by a suite of advanced tools from partners including Microsoft’s Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and G42’s banking AI solutions.
Before the broad rollout, Santander reported substantial AI integration: 40% of its software development code involved AI in June; AI models processed 100,000 anti-money laundering alerts annually; and over 280 process automation agents were active. The bank also tracks AI’s business value through both increased revenue and cost savings, having already achieved 35 million euros in value during the first quarter of 2026.
To ensure effective adoption, Santander provides employees with comprehensive training, practical guidance, and communities for sharing use cases and building confidence in AI technologies. The company views AI not as a theoretical prospect but as a practical tool currently transforming workflows and uncovering new opportunities.
During its recent Investor Day, Santander emphasized AI’s role in boosting profitability and expanding its customer base within two years. Its broader AI initiative involves investments in data infrastructure and embedding advanced analytics to deliver hyper-personalized experiences tailored to individual customers.
