Concerned that many employees were not fully embracing artificial intelligence, SharkNinja’s CEO, Mark Barrocas, took the unprecedented step of pausing regular work to host a four-day AI hackathon called “Jailbreak.” The event aimed to engage staff across all departments in hands-on AI projects, fostering collaboration and innovation in areas ranging from product development to supply chain management.

The hackathon broke down traditional silos by assembling teams of 10 to 15 employees from diverse business units. Employees worked alongside college students from the Boston area, who participated in a parallel event designed to boost skills and help SharkNinja identify promising talent. Together, they tackled around 20 major corporate initiatives, plus roughly 400 additional projects sparked by employees' own departmental challenges.

This immersive experience underlined Barrocas’s belief that AI levels the playing field, allowing contributions from anyone regardless of rank or background. An example from the event showed how a recent hire built an AI tool that automated project tracking and team accountability within 90 minutes, a feat that captured widespread attention. To motivate participants, a banner in the company’s lobby read, “If it ain’t broke, break it,” reflecting a push to rethink established processes through technology.

Projects included mining global consumer feedback from social media and segmenting it by demographics, as well as using AI to generate new ideas and optimize workflows. Barrocas described the atmosphere as one of uncertainty and exploration, with no guarantee of success but a shared drive to innovate beyond conventional boundaries.
