The Trump administration has outlined three strict non-negotiable demands for any agreement with Iran, emphasizing complete Iranian compliance on nuclear and regional security issues. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified that Tehran must relinquish all highly enriched uranium, cease any efforts to develop nuclear weapons, and guarantee unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Although talks between the two nations continue, Bessent refrained from confirming rumors about a preliminary deal involving a ceasefire extension and ongoing nuclear discussions. He reiterated that decisions will fully depend on President Trump’s directives and underscored the administration’s determination to avoid any unfavorable agreements.
Bessent credited the current combination of military and economic pressures for bringing Iran back to the negotiating table, describing this engagement on their nuclear program as unprecedented. He stressed that sanctions relief remains contingent on tangible Iranian concessions, specifically insisting that the Strait of Hormuz’s free navigation be restored and Iran abandon its nuclear ambitions entirely.
The Treasury Secretary also highlighted internal discord within Iran’s leadership, pointing to communication difficulties between its elected government, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and the clerical hierarchy. This fragmentation, according to Bessent, adds complexity to Iran’s negotiating posture.
While emphasizing the administration’s preference for a diplomatic outcome, Bessent warned that military options remain viable should talks collapse. He asserted that President Trump favors peace but is prepared to return to kinetic measures if a satisfactory agreement cannot be secured.
