Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for drone strikes against US military installations in the Middle East, including an assault on Naval Support Activity Bahrain. This retaliation came after US forces conducted airstrikes against Iranian radar and missile sites along the Iranian coast.
The US strikes were ordered following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where a Singapore-flagged commercial vessel sustained damage from an attack attributed to Iranian forces. According to US officials, the vessel was near Oman’s coastline when it was hit, despite warnings from Iran’s paramilitary navy demanding authorization for ships passing through the vital waterway.
Following the attack on the commercial tanker, President Donald Trump described the incident as a breach of a recently agreed ceasefire and confirmed that US forces responded by targeting Iranian military assets. He also stated that multiple Iranian drones fired at ships in the Strait were intercepted and destroyed.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry and the IRGC announced strikes on “US-linked targets” to retaliate against the American airstrikes. US military officials acknowledged detecting several drones launched by Iran, but they reportedly did not reach their intended targets. Bahrain condemned these attacks as a violation of its sovereignty.
The tensions come amid broader regional unrest, with Iran previously closing the Strait of Hormuz in response to demands related to Israeli military activity in Lebanon. The strategic waterway remains a flashpoint, underscored by recent attacks on commercial vessels and heightened military activity by both Iranian and US forces.
