President Donald Trump arrived at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, projecting assurance about a recent Iran deal he claims will end the U.S. conflict with the country. Despite this, his stance sparked tension among fellow leaders, who criticized his unilateral decisions and lack of prior consultation on military matters tied to the roughly 15-week conflict.
Trump’s disagreements were particularly sharp with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The discord centered around Trump's decision to engage in war operations without coordinating with these NATO members. In response, he threatened to withdraw U.S. troops from their countries, underscoring a growing rift within the alliance.
The G7 summit brought together leaders from the world’s leading democracies: France, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. In addition, several guest nations took part, including Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, South Korea, Qatar, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates. The gathering included high-level discussions during a dinner overlooking Lake Geneva at Hotel Royal Évian.
Beyond security issues, the summit spotlighted economic defense cooperation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Marconi Technologies from Montreal secured the first contract under a significant European Union defense fund. The deal, valued at over $7 million, will supply tactical radios to Poland’s military, marking an effort by Canada to diversify defense partnerships beyond the United States.
Separately, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that the Justice Department, acting on orders from President Trump, is investigating him and his wife. The reasons behind the probe remain unclear, yet Newsom highlighted ongoing federal inquiries targeting his associates and former employees, suggesting the investigation aims to uncover wrongdoing where none has so far been found. The Justice Department has not commented publicly on the matter.
