The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) has published its 2026 air power rankings, ranking 129 military air forces from 103 countries based on overall combat capability, modernization, and support infrastructure. In a striking outcome, the US Army’s air wing secured a higher ranking than China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), despite the latter’s focus on fixed-wing combat aircraft.

The US Army’s air wing earned a TruVal Rating (TVR) of 112.6, nearly double the PLAAF’s score of 63.8. This superior rating reflects not just the size of the force but its operational readiness, fleet composition, logistical backing, and mission adaptability. The Army maintains an active inventory of 4,333 aircraft, predominantly helicopters, compared to the PLAAF's 3,733 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.

Helicopters comprise 94% of the US Army’s air wing, with approximately 4,071 rotorcraft in service. The UH-60 Black Hawk variants — specifically the UH-60L and UH-60M models manufactured by Lockheed Martin — form the backbone of the fleet. These twin-engine helicopters serve multipurpose roles including troop transport, medical evacuation, and combat support. The Army also fields transport aircraft, special mission platforms, and trainers, maintaining a well-rounded, versatile force tailored for rapid deployment and battlefield support.

Readiness rates play a crucial role in the rankings. The WDMMA notes the US Army has a 50% readiness for over 2,000 helicopters and an 80% readiness across 3,466 rotorcraft, ensuring a highly deployable force. In addition, the Army has placed orders for over 200 new helicopters, emphasizing continuous modernization.

By contrast, the PLAAF, while larger in fixed-wing combat aircraft and unique strike capabilities, scores lower due to relative fleet balance and operational readiness parameters as measured by WDMMA. This ranking underscores the differing strategic roles of the two air arms: the US Army prioritizes rotary-wing assets geared toward battlefield mobility and support, whereas the PLAAF focuses more on air superiority fighter jets and bombers.

At the top of the WDMMA 2026 rankings sits the US Air Force with the highest TVR score of 242.9, followed by the US Navy and the Russian Air Force. The US Marine Corps air wing also ranks within the top five, making US military aviation dominant across multiple service branches.
