Western Sydney International Airport, Australia's newest greenfield airport, will operate entirely on renewable electricity thanks to a partnership with CleanPeak Energy. Starting from day one, CleanPeak will provide all the airport’s power needs using a combination of solar generation, battery storage, and additional renewable energy sources.
CleanPeak plans to invest over $50 million to expand the airport’s renewable infrastructure, including the installation of 9 MWp of new rooftop solar panels and a 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This investment complements the airport’s existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar array, collectively delivering more than 18 GWh of clean electricity annually under a seven-year Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA).
The airport’s electricity demand is expected to grow significantly in the coming years—from approximately 40 GWh annually today to around 120 GWh within five years. CleanPeak will meet this expansion by leveraging its increasing portfolio of solar farms alongside on-site generation and storage. The setup guarantees reliable, round-the-clock renewable power to all airport facilities and tenants.
Designed with sustainability integrated into its core operations, Western Sydney International Airport employs renewable electricity to power baggage handling, terminal functions, and even electric airside machinery such as pushback tractors. CleanPeak will also manage the airport’s embedded network distribution system, ensuring consistent energy delivery and grid optimization across the precinct.
The fully integrated energy system under CleanPeak's operation will include:
- The existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar system, which CleanPeak leases and operates;
- An additional 9 MWp of solar capacity encompassing a 4.95 MWp installation on the cargo terminal rooftop and a further 4 MWp on a second cargo terminal rooftop;
- A 30 MW / 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System scheduled for completion in 2027, aimed at stabilizing supply, enhancing resilience, and managing peak electricity demand;
- An embedded network infrastructure that efficiently distributes electricity to all airport users.
CleanPeak’s CEO highlighted the project as an example of how critical infrastructure can transition to renewable energy sources without sacrificing reliability or operational effectiveness. By combining multiple energy assets and innovative management, the airport will sustain its operations 24/7 on renewable power. CleanPeak began supplying renewable electricity to Western Sydney International Airport in May 2026, marking a significant milestone in Australia’s shift toward sustainable infrastructure.
