A new set of four public DC fast chargers has begun operating at Brewery Creek in Greilickville, Michigan, aiming to improve electric vehicle (EV) travel across the Grand Traverse region. The chargers allow EV drivers to add a significant battery boost during stops lasting between 30 and 45 minutes, catering to both local residents and visitors.

The project emerged from a collaboration between Elmwood Township and Traverse City Light & Power, which secured a 10-year agreement to join the Traverse City Electric Vehicle (TCEV) Network. Situated on the west side of M-22 at Cedar Street, the chargers are positioned in a highly visible location near the Elmwood Township Marina and local amenities. Officials chose Brewery Creek after evaluating multiple sites based on accessibility, construction timelines, and the demand for fast-charging options in the area.

Fast chargers like these are critical to expanding practical EV travel, particularly in regions frequented by commuters and seasonal visitors. A typical 30- to 45-minute charge enables drivers to extend their journey without lengthy delays, reducing “range anxiety” often associated with electric vehicles along busy highways such as M-22. This infrastructure also encourages broader EV adoption by providing convenient charging locations outside residential settings, addressing the needs of those without home charging access.

Financially, the installation was facilitated by a prior agreement with General Motors, which helped cover equipment costs, allowing Elmwood Township to add the chargers without direct installation expenses. Additionally, the project may be eligible for federal incentives, including potential reimbursements of up to 40% through the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, further easing funding challenges.

Local officials emphasize that while the parking at Brewery Creek primarily serves marina and park visitors, the EV chargers remain open to the public at all times. For those able to install home chargers, options exist like Level 2 units that provide economical overnight charging, with companies such as Qmerit offering free installation estimates.

The new chargers represent a strategic investment in infrastructure that supports cleaner transportation by making fast electric vehicle refueling more accessible and convenient in the region, aligning with broader sustainability and energy goals.
