The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H. D. Kumaraswamy, chaired a significant meeting with leading electric two-wheeler manufacturers to discuss strategies for building a competitive and innovation-driven electric mobility ecosystem in India. The discussions focused on strengthening the domestic manufacturing base and positioning the country as a global hub for electric two-wheelers.

Manufacturers shared insights into their progress in developing indigenous electric mobility platforms and technologies, emphasizing their commitment to homegrown engineering and product development. They highlighted the importance of continued policy incentives and the need for adjustments in existing schemes to better support the expanding electric two-wheeler sector.

Specifically, the industry sought an extension of the “PM E-DRIVE Scheme,” which supports electric two-wheelers as part of a broader clean mobility initiative, along with revisions to the “PLI Auto Scheme” to align with the evolving market demands. The delegation also presented opportunities to accelerate local production, enhance domestic value addition, and tap into export markets, reinforcing their vision of making Indian manufacturers globally competitive.

In response, Kumaraswamy assured comprehensive backing from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, scaling production, and boosting exports within the electric vehicle sector. He connected these efforts to the broader goals of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) and “Viksit Bharat 2047,” envisioning a future where domestic manufacturing serves as a cornerstone for national development.

The minister also emphasized the alignment of the electric vehicle industry’s growth with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of achieving “Net Zero by 2070.” He stressed that advancing indigenous electric vehicle manufacturing and clean mobility technologies will be critical to meeting the country’s climate commitments and economic aspirations.
