Tesla has opened orders in the US for the Model Y L, a six-seat variant of its best-selling Model Y SUV, marking nearly a year since its debut in China. This new three-row configuration starts at $61,990 and is expected to begin deliveries by October, targeting families and customers seeking more passenger space without compromising electric range.
The Model Y L gained rapid popularity in China, selling more than 120,000 units in its first month on the market. It was introduced amid growing competition from local electric vehicle brands and quickly became one of Tesla’s top performers, offering a premium experience with design adjustments tailored for larger groups.
Key interior features include heated and ventilated seats in the first two rows, touchscreen controls, and a third row equipped with power reclining and one-touch folding functions for convenience. Its battery delivers an estimated range of 325 miles per charge, slightly exceeding that of the base Model Y and the Model Y Performance versions, demonstrating efficiency despite the added seating capacity.
The initial US launch will feature a limited “Launch Series” edition, which includes unique badging, upscale interior enhancements, a year of complimentary supercharging, and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software package. This strategy signals Tesla’s continued commitment to advancing electric vehicle offerings even as the company expands its focus on artificial intelligence and robotics.
With Tesla discontinuing the Model S and Model X earlier this year to prioritize new technological ventures, the Model Y L helps fill a crucial gap in the company’s SUV lineup. While Tesla posted strong global sales figures recently, its US market experienced a noticeable decline year-over-year, highlighting the Model Y L’s potential role in reversing that trend.
