Uzbekistan has made headway in its $300 million waste-to-energy initiative through collaboration with China's Shanghai SUS Environment, focusing on converting municipal solid waste into electricity. The project targets the Kashkadarya and Samarkand regions and seeks to address both energy needs and waste management challenges.

Discussions took place during a working meeting in Shanghai between representatives from Shanghai SUS Environment and an adviser at the Uzbek Embassy in China, who also acts on behalf of Uzbekistan's State Customs Committee. They examined construction progress and tackled implementation issues, agreeing to enhance direct communication channels to expedite problem solving and strengthen cooperation.

The project is grounded in a presidential resolution issued in early 2025 and is scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2027. It represents a significant foreign direct investment, with construction and installation works advancing in phases. Uzbekistan's Embassy in China, together with the Customs Committee’s entrepreneur support department, collaborates closely with government bodies and project stakeholders to facilitate Chinese investments in the country.

Beyond this initiative, Uzbekistan is actively coordinating a total of nine investment projects involving Chinese capital within the waste-to-energy and green economy sectors. Such efforts underline the country’s strategic push toward integrating sustainable technologies and attracting foreign funding to modernize its energy infrastructure.
