Cloudflare, the US-based cloud connectivity firm, revealed plans to reduce its global workforce by over 1,100 positions as it pivots toward AI-powered workflows. The decision stems from a sweeping reorganization rather than traditional layoffs prompted by financial pressure or employee performance.

The company highlighted a dramatic surge in internal AI adoption, noting use has increased more than sixfold in recent months. Employees across departments such as engineering, finance, human resources, and marketing now rely increasingly on AI agents to perform routine tasks, prompting Cloudflare to reimagine its structure to better align with this technological shift.

In its internal communication, Cloudflare emphasized that the cuts do not reflect the abilities or contributions of affected staff. Instead, the company is redesigning every process, team, and role to operate effectively in what it calls the "agentic AI era." The layoffs aim to consolidate the restructuring into a single phase to minimize uncertainty and avoid multiple rounds of job cuts.

Cloudflare assured employees that those impacted will receive personalized notifications via both official and personal email channels. Severance packages include full base salary through the end of 2026, continuation of US healthcare benefits until the end of the year, and extended equity vesting through mid-August. Even employees who have not yet passed their one-year vesting cliff are eligible for prorated equity benefits as part of their separation.

This strategic overhaul reflects Cloudflare’s intent to boost agility and innovation while continuing to invest heavily in AI-driven products and services. By restructuring its workforce and operational model, the company aims to maintain competitiveness amid rapid industry-wide transformations driven by artificial intelligence.
